Make no mistake, this is a business blog, It's not about politics, travel, or culture. However, 2020 is zipping by at lightning speed & it feels like something changes every day. In order to survive, the wheels of commerce will have to take a new road so we will need all the help we can get. Since helpful business lessons are not only found in the office, I am always on the lookout for things happening in our culture,/world, that provide *teachable moments* for those of us in the business space. Five of the many takeaways from 2020 that I believe are essential to be successful in business going forward are:
-When considering hiring a new employee: hire the person; train the skill
-Real leadership is not about doing a job well. It's about taking care of your people which enables them to do their job well
-Always surround yourself with people smarter than you are [when they look good, you look good]
-It's not always obvious, but we don't travel this road alone
As individual observations, these 5 are definitely not original or in any way, profound. Beyond that, 2020 has served up MANY teachable concepts...not just these. However, because of COVID-19, the world stopped, turned, & changed "on a dime," which means businesses have been challenged in ways we haven't seen before...at least in my lifetime. We are all traveling a new road, so taken as a unit, they serve as guideposts for 2021. Hopefully, they will help!
