Merry Christmas, Happy Hanakah...basically season's greetings whatever holidays you may [or may not] celebrate this time of year. Like many others, I have taken time out this week to be with family & friends. One of the many things I generally do this time of year is see movies, new ones and old ones. This year's last line of the week comes from a relatively old movie I recently saw-Lord of the Flies. It's the story of what becomes of a group of British schoolboys when left to fend for themselves on an island until they are finally rescued. Naturally it makes a compelling statement about the power of group mentality or"groupthink" as well as who we are and/or what we can become when social veneers are stripped away. In the movie, after the thrill of adventure had worn off & some of the boys were longing to be rescued, one of the characters, a little boy named Piggy because he was overweight, said something that caught my attention perhaps because it is the end of the year. While wishing his aunt was there to help. he reasoned that:
"...grownups know things...they meet, have tea, and discuss, then things will be all right..."
While understanding that children reside in a far simpler world, I found myself thinking that if adults even came close to measuring up to their perception of us, we would be in a vastly different place right now. However, since we are on the cusp of a new year, the sentiment expressed here gives us something to aspire to at least!
A Consultant's Chronicles & the Line of the Week will return in 2010! Until then, Happy New Year!
